Sid Bridges (my brother) with Julius Peppers

I can't believe the email I just got. Check out the picture of my brother with Julius Peppers. Something just isn't fair about this. Go Panthers! (and Cowboys) Can you actually like both? I do.

Alphabits....bit the dust.

Growing up, I used to love to eat Alphabits (dry mind you...milk made them too soggy.) Today, I had to run to the store to pick up some ingredients for Alphabits treats for a recruiting event the DTS Admissions office is doing.
Much to my dismay, I could not find any Alphabits cereal!

I return to work and my super-sleuth friend (and co-worker) discovers that they have discontinued making Alphabits. They attempted making a "lower sugar" Alphabets that (for obvious reasons) wasn't a hit....so they decided to stop making them all together. What a sad day for the cereal world. What was your favorite cereal as a kid?

Carmel Nut Crunch

Sounds like an ice cream flavor, doesn't it? It's actually a new recipe I tried this weekend (from allrecipes.com) for a friend's 40th birthday party. It's a great snack food for sports games, parties, etc. It's fairly easy and very yummy!

INGREDIENTS
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups Cheerios or Crispix cereal
  • 1 cup pecan halves
  • 1 cup walnut halves
  • 1 cup salted dry-roasted peanuts
  • 1 cup whole unblanched almonds
(You can really use any combination of nuts that you prefer. I put in about 1-2 cups extra of nuts and it worked really well with the topping...)

DIRECTIONS

In a saucepan, heat the brown sugar, corn syrup, butter and salt over medium heat for 5 minutes or until sugar is dissolved, stirring constantly.

In a large heatproof bowl, combine the remaining ingredients. Pour hot syrup over cereal mixture; stir until well coated. Spread into greased 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan.

Bake at 300 degrees F for 25-30 minutes or until crisp, stirring every 10 minutes. Cool on a wire rack or tin foil until slightly firm.

The Cowboys

Now admittedly I am not from Texas but it sure does feels good to be in Texas when the Cowboys begin the season with an impressive win. For some reason is just very encouraging to watch the Cowboys win especially after the end of the season last year when Romo fumbled the ball.

I was recently wondering though why it is that we all can get so enthralled by football and other sports. Is it the competition? Is it the memories of being a child and playing those sports? Its really hard to tell exactly what it is but for some reason it is almost part of my DNA to watch and enjoy sports.

Any thoughts?

Sid Bream

The other day I got an email from a missionary who is at home in Pennsylvania telling me about something interesting that happened to her. Two weeks ago she went to church on a Sunday and it just so happened that that Sunday Sid Bream of the Pittsburgh Pirates was preaching.

Now if you don't know who Sid Bream is, let me just give you a little reminder. Back in 1992, the Braves were playing against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NLCS. It was game seven and the Pirates were just a couple outs away from making it to the World Series. I was sitting on my couch at home watching the game hoping that I too would soon be in Pittsburgh watching the World Series. We had already pre-purchased tickets to all World Series games in Pittsburgh.

With 1 outs in the 9th inning, two runs scored of which Sid Bream was the 2nd one and the Braves beat the Pirates 3-2 and ended the Pirates and my hopes for going to the World Series. Take a look at the video on YouTube, its at the 3:39 point in the video.

There's also a much better write up on it on Wikipedia, just click here.
