An Effective Approach to Evangelism by Rev. I.J. Fontenot

An Effective Approach to Evangelism by Rev. I.J. Fontenot

While at the hospital visiting our friend Matt Parker after his brain surgery, I had the chance to get to know Rev. I.J. Fontenot. I think everyone should get to know him. You see, Rev. Fontenot cares about people and not only did he host us in his home for some cheese cake (thanks Fay for making it before you had to leave) but also took the time to share a little wisdom with Lindsey and I.

Rev. Fontenot challenged us to rethink how we approach evangelism. Many people see evangelism as an opportunity to attack others, their values, beliefs, etc. He encouraged us to not approach evangelism in that manner as it does nothing but push people away and become defensive.

Instead his suggestion was that we focus on teaching the word of God, the Bible, to people in a loving way that encourages them to seek instruction from the Lord. He wisely pointed out that we are more apt to trust in Christ as our Savior through an encounter with the Bible rather than someone pointing out our errors. The Holy Spirit must work in and through people to change their hearts and minds.

Refreshed. Encouraged. Motivated. Challenged. Inspired. Loved. We felt all those emotions as we left his house. Mentors are wonderful. Who do you have in your life who is willing to speak truth and encourage you?
