Scofield

Nope we're not talking Prison Break's Scofield..... We're talking about C.I. Scofield. Many of you know of him because of the Scofield Reference Bible. He wrote the notes in that Bible. If you are from Dallas, you may know him from Scofield Memorial Church. But you may not know how much of an indirect influence C.I. Scofield has had directly on my life. I was thinking about it the other day and it's kinda weird how God works!

My first encounter with C.I. Scofield is probably one of the most important. For second grade to fourth grade, I went to Scofield Christian School.

It was at Scofield that I became a Christian. Through one of the talks during chapel, I heard the Gospel and realized what it really meant to become a Christian. In third grade, I realized that I was a sinner in need of a Savior to save me and clean me. Would I have heard the gospel somewhere else and become a Christian? Probably. But it was through a school at a church that C.I. Scofield started where my relationship with the Lord first began.

This church, originally known as First Congregational Church, also saw one of its earliest pastors, Lewis Sperry Chafer, begin a small seminary whose objective was to train men in expository preaching and teaching the scriptures. This seminary, originally called the Evangelical Theological Seminary in 1924, later became known as Dallas Theological Seminary (or DTS).

Brad and I have had the privilege to spend the past four years at DTS. Due to C.I. Scofield's influence in the life of Lewis Sperry Chafer, we were trained in how to study, understand, and share the truths of the Bible with others.

During our time at DTS, Brad and I began our ministry with CAM International.

CAM was started by C.I. Scofield in 1891 because he had a heart to reach Central America, so he started Central American Mission (now known as CAM International). Because of C.I. Scofield, we now have an established missions organization that will be our sending agency as we head out to the mission field.

How awesome is the impact that this man had on my life...through three institutions: Scofield Memorial Church, Dallas Theological Seminary, and CAM International. It's amazing how God could accomplish all this through the heart he had to preach the Word of God and go out and reach Spanish speakers! Who knows what other impact Scofield will have on our lives in the years to come...but we're ready to see what that might be!

National Infertility Awareness Week

This week -- October 19-25, 2008 -- is National Infertility Awareness Week. You may or may not know that Brad and I have been struggling with infertility issues for a few years now. I just learned this week about this Infertility Awareness Week and it happened to be very timely as we just learned that our last round of infertility treatments was unsuccessful.

We would love for you to pray with us as we continue down this path of infertility struggles. All of you who know Brad and I (either separately or us as a couple) know that we have always loved children and have looked forward to having a family for so long. It is a deep desire of our heart and we are just learning to continue to rely on the Lord for strength during this time of hurt.

Now that you are aware of this awareness week, it would be awesome to have you pray for us, to have you keep your ears open for opportunities for us to adopt, to keep us in mind if you know anyone working in the infertility circles that would be willing to give us some discounts/samples/reduced cost for treatment....as not a bit of infertility is covered by insurance.

We know that God has a plan for us and it's hard to see that right now, but we can ask our friends and family to keep praying that God would make His path clear for us and that we can follow it in faith.

A Double Rainbow

Ever heard of a double rainbow? Me either until yesterday. While driving home with my friend John here in Chicago, he looked up and said "Brad, look, there's a double rainbow." I thought, "What is he talking about?." There it was, a double rainbow full of color and we could see the entire arch and we were able to get a picture of it.

If you look closely, you'll see just to the left of the main rainbown that the exact inverse of the colors in the main rainbow appears on the left.

Rainbows remind us of God's faithfulness to His people. The next time you see one, take a moment to reflect on the power and sovereignty of our God who creatively and wonderfully demonstrates His own attributes in His creation.

Chihuahua

Many of you have probably seen the new previews for Beverly Hills Chihuahua---a little Disney movie about a Chihuahua from Beverly Hills.

The other night I was watching the Office and saw this movie trailer. If you've seen it, you've heard the theme music with the "Chihuahua Song". Man..that made us flash back to memories of when we lived in Spain. Why do you ask? Let me explain.

We first lived in Spain in 2002-2003. Brad lived there for a year, while I was there for 6 months. (This was obviously before we were married...!) In 2002, the Chihuahua song (click the song below to play it) was extremely popular in Europe and definitely in Spain at the time. They had the Chihuahua song playing on TV commercials, the radio, etc.

Now Brad, being the fun and exciting guy that he is, would sing this song frequently to his host mom that he was living with - Berta (pictured below).

Berta was a cute, funny older lady who took him under her wing and treated him just like her son. She would just laugh and laugh at her crazy little Gringo who would serenade her with the Chihuahua song at the dinner table. After a while, she began calling Brad her little Chihuahua...and soon after that he was her "Chihuahuina" (which is like saying her "little chihuahua"...a little more of a term of endearment than just plan Chihuahua.)

Even when we went back to visit Berta during a trip to Spain in 2006, she greeting him with the traditional Spanish kisses on the cheeks and said "Bienvenido mi Chihuahuina!" [Welcome my little Chihuahua!]

When we saw this movie trailer, Brad got really excited because finally people will understand when he starts singing the Chihuahua song. (Before we just got some weird looks from people around us in America.)

Do you have a song that brings back a flood of memories and story to tell. Share your tale in the comments! We'd love to hear what connections music makes with your life!

Chocolate Chip Cabinet Catastrophe

So anyone who knows me, knows that I love to bake. I enjoy cooking too, but I will never turn down a chance to bake! I've always been the designated baker in the Beebe household, and I love it! But this week I ran into something that has never happened before in the Beebe's history of living in their house 17 years...

I got some chocolate chips at the store the other day to make some cc cookies. (Who can't turn down fresh baked, warm cookies...or better yet the dough right before you bake them?) I put them in the cabinet so wandering snackers couldn't find them. (see picture)

Take notice of this cabinet....right under it is a light to light up the counter. Yes, the light is flourescent and yes, it is secured to the bottom of the cabinet (not on the wall).

So I go to the kitchen to make cookies today to find this:

The lights melted the bag of chocolate chips that was in the cabinet above it! note to self: put cchips on the 2nd self next time.

Thankfully, I was able to salvage enough chocolate chips to make us a batch of chocolate chips...for which we all can be happy.

Partner Profile - Shannon Barber

Imagine this...raising an infant boy, working a job, and still finding time to partner with us in ministry. Shannon Barber is.

After attending high school with Lindsey at Trinity Christian Academy in Addison, TX, Shannon and Lindsey have continued to stay in touch over the years. Shannon recently came over to visit us and let us hold her little (well, maybe not very little) baby boy.

She asked Lindsey if there was anything she could do to help us out like something administrative that she could do from home for example. We mentioned to Shannon that she could help us out big time by folding our brochures and paperclipping a prayer card to each one. Shannon literally spent hours doing hundreds and hundreds of these.

Then she told us that she was done in less than a couple weeks. This past week she brought them by and gave us a huge box full will everything done. We also got to hold her little son Noah.

If you'd like to partner with us in ministry by serving, praying, or giving, let us know by visiting our partner page.

Thanks Shannon for your service and your prayers. It means more than you know.

Twitter

Some people have asked me what in the world Twitter is. Well, to be honest before August 27th I had no idea either. We were meeting with a couple who have decided to partner with us in ministry (see Partner Profile: Bill and Karyn Ward) and they couldn't believe that I had never heard of Twitter.

Some people refer to Twitter as microblogging and other people as status updates on steroids. Whichever way you want to refer to it doesn't matter.

What Twitter allows you to do is to maintain relationships across large or small distances with many people simultaneously by alerting them to your thoughts, activities, ideas, or plans. When you post a new 140 character (about 2 sentences) update, the people who are "following" you on Twitter receive an update either to their computer, cell phone, or other device that alerts them to your ideas, activities, or thoughts. You can also share links to interesting articles or other information on the web.

Interested in learning more? Check out Marc Pitman's article about Twitter and its benefits for those working in the non-profit sector. His comments are also quite instructive for anyone in my opinion. Enjoy.

Partner Profile - Bill and Karyn Ward

I first met Bill and Karyn Ward about a year or two ago when we went with the Beebe family on vacation in Colorado. Little did I know that we'd get to see them again this past summer again. They have kids that are the same age as Lindsey's little brothers and are some really great people.

About a month ago, Bill and Karyn took Lindsey and I out to eat at Blue Mesa (a Tex-Mex) restaurant here in Dallas. To be honest, I knew very little about the Wards and was simply looking forward to the chance to get to know them better since they had asked so many questions about our ministry when we had seen them before.

Bill and Karyn really impacted us that night at Blue Mesa. First of all they took about 1.5 hours AFTER eating our meal to ask us questions about our ministry, our marriage, our planning, our financial support, etc. They encouraged us and demonstrated to us a desire to serve in missions by encouraging, supporting, and praying for missionaries.

Bill and Karyn recently sent in their pledge to partner with Lindsey and I by(1) praying for us, (2) beginning their monthly financial pledge this month, and (3) also giving us tips on websites like twitter.com that we can use to stay in touch with family and friends before and while we are on the mission field (Karyn even convinced one of us to sign up for twitter [go to www.twitter.com/bradbridges but you'll need a login to view the updates]).

As an architect (Bill) and mom of three (Karyn), they have busy lives but realize that God can use them to impact the world right from Dallas, TX.

Thanks Bill and Karyn.
